Mustang Valley, Nepal

Mustang Valley derives its name from Tibetan word “fertile plain”. Because of it's isolation and it's unique cultural heritage, the Nepalese government has restricted access to the area. 

The valley is divided into 2 parts- Lower Mustang and Upper Mustang. The cost for trekking is considerably higher in Upper Mustang because trekkers must hire experienced guides. Only experienced trekkers are allowed to take on the barren and semi-arid regions of Upper Mustang. No one is allowed to trek alone. 

Known for adventure, treks, and barren mountains this valley is located at Nepal-China (Formerly Tibet) border at an elevation of 13,200 feet. The valley remains cold and dry throughout the year, with snowfall in Upper Mustang in the winter months. 

The ideal time to visit this area is June through September, and even then the temperatures can be quite chilly. December and January are the most freezing months.

Visit to both Lower and Upper Mustang require prior permission. Permission requires an in person visit to Nepal Tourism Board office based at Pokhra which costs NPR 1600 for Lower Mustang followed by USD 500 for Upper Mustang. I personally opted to visit till Lower Mustang wherein they issued 2 permits 1) TIMS- Tourist Information Management System followed by 2) ACP- Annapurna Circuit Permit.

Tip- Be sure to visit Tourism board office by 4pm and bring along your passport and any identity proof for Indians. There is a minimal processing time of 30 minutes.

 

Places to Visit

Jomsom Lake – Located at an elevation of 9000 feet this lake is surrounded by barren mountains. There you can  enjoy serenity, peacefulness, and  mesmerizing views while sipping coffee/tea.

Jomsom Village – This village is known for it's houses made of mud and clay.

Muktinath Temple- Mukti in the Hindi language means salvation; hence, as the name signifies, this Hindu temple is known to be a place to receive liberation.

This is a Vishnu temple and is one of the highest temples in the world. It is revered by Hindus as well as Buddhists. 


Walk/Trek/Ride in the valley- The best way to explore this valley is to choose your preferable mode of transportation and enjoy the magnificent terrain, desolation, and natural beauty of the valley.


How to reach

In addition to trekking, mountain biking has become very popular. Bikes are available for rent. I personally preferred to rent a bike from Pokhara to take in the scenery of this beautiful valley. You may also opt to take a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom.

 

 

Where to Stay and Eat

There are plenty of home stay options available in the valley. There you can request meals and enjoy an authentic experience with the local people. 


Costing

Price may vary as per inflation and the time of the month, while you may expect to pay approximately 1500-2000 NPR per day to rent a motorbike from Pokhara. Home stays are approximately 1500 NPR  for double bed room, with meals costing 250-300 NPR per meal/per person.

Note:. Indian currency is accepted throughout Nepal so no need to convert your cash.

Voyage to Mukteshwar and Kasar Devi (Hidden Gem in Himalayas)
