Voyage to Mukteshwar and Kasar Devi (Hidden Gem in Himalayas)

It doesn’t matter how long we’re away, our hearts eventually call us back where we belong. That place that calls me back are the Himalayas. Did you find yours? J

If you are a frequent visitor on my page, then you must be aware that I always search for off-beat places which are not so popular and less crowded.

This time I was looking for some places like that in the Himalayan ranges of Uttarakhand state. My excitement and curiosity eventually led me to Mukteshwar and Kasar Devi.

Mukteshwar’s  neighbour Nainital attracts lots of tourist traffic from the surrounding states and Delhi. Mukteshwar is better for those who like to explore off beat areas and less crowded hill towns.

The serene views of the Himalayas, lush green trees and the whistling chant of birds make this place worth visiting. There aren’t many activities to do at this place, but it is a beautiful place to enjoy nature. Below I will share some popular spots to explore.

Mukteshwar Temple

This temple is located on a hill top and devoted to Lord Shiva. The view from the temple is mesmerising and it’s definitely worth visiting.

Chauli ki Jali

This place is also located on the same hill, next to the temple. This place is popular for watching the beautiful sunsets and adventure activities like zip lining and rock climbing.

Bhalugarh Waterfall

This place is located about 7 Kms from Mukteshwar. You’ll need to cover an easy trek of 1.3 Kms to reach the waterfall.  The path crosses many bridges and river crossings along the way. The path is so beautiful that you won’t realise how long it took you to reach the waterfall.

Tip- There is an entry fee of Rs.50 and they only accept cash. No cards.

Kasar Devi Temple and Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary (A full day sightseeing tour)

This Hindu temple is located 59 Kms from Mukteshwar at a high altitude of 2116 meters. The journey from Mukteshwar itself is amazing to reach this place.

After visiting the temple you may proceed toward Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary. You’ll need to cover another 17 kms to reach this sanctuary to see some interesting bird species. A popular spot in sanctuary called Zero point offers mesmerising view of Himalayas. You may drive your vehicle inside the sanctuary, although there is a nominal fee of Rs. 150/- per person to enter Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary.

Where to Eat

There are a lot of small restaurants available in Mukteshwar, but I would strongly recommend Nirvana organic pahadi rasoi (A Restaurant) as they offer delicious traditional Kumaoni Thali.

Note- Veg. Thali costs Rs.350 while Non Veg. Thali costs Rs.450/-

How to Reach Mukteshwar

By Road – It took me 8.5 hrs., by bike, to cover 356 Kms of distance from Delhi to Mukteshwar. You may also opt for frequently available buses from Delhi to Haldwani, then you need to hire a private cab to cover the remaining 68 km distance.

Tip- I would strongly recommend to take your own vehicle or rent a vehicle from Delhi or your origin city else you will end up paying heavy amount for the 2.5 hour point to point taxi service.

By Air – Nearest airport is in Pantnagar which is located 95 Kms from Mukteshwar. Remaining distance needs to be covered by private cab.

By Train - Nearest train station is located in Kathgodam, which is located 61 Kms from Mukteshwar. Remaining distance needs to be covered by private cab.  Check out sharing a cab as well. You may be lucky enough to find a companion for the same destination at same time.

Best Time to Visit

Winters are usually cold here hence ideal months to visit Mukteshwar are April till June followed by September till Mid October.

Tip- Be sure to carry at least a warm jacket. The evenings can get chilly.

Where to Stay

There are a lot of homestays and hotels, although there isn’t much option for backpackers. The only backpacker hostel is called “Zostel”.

I would strongly recommend you to stay in a homestay with a local family for an authentic and traditional experience that may stay with you for a lifetime.

From my experience I would strongly recommend a homestay because of its peaceful location, warm hospitality and kind nature of the host. This property belongs to Mr. Bhupendra Bisht. You may contact him at # +91 9548835385 as his property isn’t listed online yet.

Additional information - You may plan to spend overnight in Kasar Devi as well wherein Hots travel hostel and guest house is the perfect place to stay. You may book online or contact owner Ankit at # +91 8629855867 for better deal.
