Bijli Mahadev - More Than A Temple

Bijli Mahadev

As the name suggest Bijli referred to lightning bolts, while Mahadev referred to lord Shiva, before proceeding further I would like to park journey for a while and discuss about the history of this temple, it is said that there was a demon who use to harm living beings at this place hence lord Shiva killed him to protect the society, and the size of the demon was so huge that it got converted into a hill after his death.

There is a belief that lightning bolts destroy the Shiva Linga after every 12 years, as per the request made by Lord Shiva to Lord Indra, and the priest uses butter to reattach the Shiva Linga.

The Journey
Resuming back to the journey, this holy temple is located at an elevation of 2460 meters, located at a distance of around 22 kilometers from Kullu city of Himachal Pradesh state in Indian mainland. Temple can be reached through a 3 kilometers trek which isn’t difficult as terrain is friendly for people with low pace as well. Considering the advantage of the hill top location, the view from the temple is so mesmerizing, you can see entire Kullu valley, including the runway of Kullu Airport, Highway for kilometers, The Beas River and the entire valley.

How to Reach
Bijli Mahadev Temple Kullu City is well connected with Buses and limited flight options from all major cities in India, Post reaching Kullu, you may rent a cab or rent a self-drive vehicle to reach the temple, A small private cab will cost approximately INR 3000/- for round trip while a self-drive 2 wheeler can be arranged for approximate rent of INR 500/- (fuel excluded).
