Is Kanyakumari a place for you?

Is Kanyakumari a place for you?

Is Kanyakumari the place for you? It may or may not be.

This southern tip destination has been in my bucket list for quite some time.  I don’t know why I waited so long to visit this place.

We started our road trip to Kanyakumari from Thiruvananthapuram city at noon, as our goal was to see the sunset from the most southern point of the country.

The four-hour bike ride through lavish green trees and the coastal belt made our day. The journey itself was rejuvenating as much as the destination.

The Perfect Sunset

After reaching Kanyakumari we quickly parked our bikes and started running towards the view tower to see the sunset.

Tip – You should reach the view tower one hour before to ensure that you are able to grab the perfect spot to view the sunset.

Food Walk

Considering the location you will get plenty of delicious South Indian food options, varying from junk food available with street vendors to lavish 5 course South Indian meals.

The Most Awaited Moment:  The Sunrise

We started our day off early, at 0530 hrs., to view the famous sunrise from “Triveni Sangam”. Here, the Bay of Bengal meets the Laccadive Sea and the Arabian Sea.

This panoramic view of the sunrise was the best part of the trip!

Time to explore the Vivekananda rock memorial

Swami Vivekananda rock memorial is located on an island that is almost 500 meters away from the Indian mainland. This memorial was built in the year 1970 and was inaugurated by the former president of India.

Ferry service is available from 0745 till 1700 hrs. to visit this island.

There is a nominal fee of Rs.50/- per person to avail ferry service. Upon reaching you also need to purchase an entry fee of Rs.20/- per person.

Tip- Must carry cash as they do not accept digital forms of payment.

Legend says that Swami Vivekananda came to Kanyakumari on 24.02.1892 and meditated on this rock for few days before his departure for Chicago to participate in the World Religious Conference in 1893.

Meditation Space

There is a meditation hall located inside the memorial premises dedicated to meditation lovers and the best part is that there is no time based limitation.  Stay as long as you like.  Just be sure to catch the ferry by 1700 hr.

The Last Hurrah

All good things must come to end and It wasn’t really easy to say bye to the mesmerizing view of Triveni Sangam.  This trip was undoubtedly one to remember.

How to Reach

Kanyakumari is well connected with Train and Bus with all major cities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala state of India though the nearest airport is located in Thiruvananthapuram which is located 90 kms from Kanyakumari.

Where to Stay

You will find the end number of guesthouses in Kanyakumari starting from Rs.400/- a night.

Where to eat

Small local restaurants will offer you authentic Tamil food which you won't find in a big restaurant.
